The correspondence, more than 125 letters in all, covers nearly the entire war (1862-1865), while focusing on events in Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee from early 1863 to late 1865., This collection of letters written by George and James Ewing reveals the Civil War through the eyes of two soldiers from Stockbridge, Michigan. The correspondence, more than 125 letters in all, covers nearly the entire war (18621865), while focusing on events in Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee from early 1863 to late 1865. The first two parts of the book contain letters from George to his parents and his sister, Susan. These letters relate the 20th Michigan Infantry Regiment's involvement in Michigan's Civil War effort. In Part Three, correspondence from James to Susan offers detailed information about the 12th Michigan Infantry Regiment. This collection provides "unedited, honestly raw reports about what war is close up." A glossary is included to hep readers understand the Ewings' unique spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. The letters are transcribed and presented in their original form so that their "flavor" is preserved.
