We can observe the remote origin of writings of this kind during the Attic period, we can follow its obscure development in the Alexandrine period, but it is not until the Roman period that its growth and perfection become perceptible. We must not be surprised at the tardy recognition accorded by the ancients to a class of literature which is so popular amongst ourselves - distinguished from history by the admixture of fiction and the comparative unimportance of the events described; from poetry by the employment of prose and the representation of the manners of social life in place of the nearly always ideal picture of life in general. - y***1 (925)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseUnfortunately the book is actually a reproduction of a poor quality photocopy of a book from a college library. Many pages are unreadable because of the bad photocopy attempt and some illustrations and fold out maps are completely missing. This reproduction should be remade from an original book with all maps and illustrations faithfully reproduced in their entirety. The seller should of reviewed the quality of this reproduction before listing it on ebay. The neutral rating is well deserved.
