Synopsis
In many ways, the Heinkel He 177 "Greif" (Griffon) was Nazi Germany's "lost" strategic bomber. With some fundamental creases ironed out, and built in numbers, the He 177 would have offered the Luftwaffe the means with which to carry out long-range, mass bombing attacks against targets of a strategic nature. Although competing interests and personalities served to prevent this from happening, from mid-1943 the aircraft nevertheless saw service over England, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and in Russia. The He 177 flew to the end of the war, with some machines undertaking extremely hazardous low-level missions against Soviet armor in Poland in late 1944--45. This fascinating book, filled with detailed artwork and contemporary photographs, tells the story of this aircraft, including the political infighting at the top of the Luftwaffe's hierarchy that stymied its development, its radical technical design, and state-of-the-art weaponry., The story of the He 177 is one that features political infighting, conflicting personalities at the top of the Luftwaffe's hierarchy, radical technical design and state-of-the-art weaponry. It was an aircraft that, despite being stymied by debate over its design, managed to enter operational service and execute its roles both as a day/night bomber and maritime strike aircraft. The first examples were delivered to II./KG 40 in western France in the autumn of 1943, from where they flew operations armed with Hs 293 guided bombs against Allied convoys. He 177s also took part in Operation Steinbock, the Luftwaffe's nocturnal air offensive against the British Isles in early 1944, frequently operating over London. Other aircraft flew anti-shipping sorties from southern France against the Allied fleets off the coast of Italy in early 1944, again using air-launched weapons. This fascinating book, filled with detailed artwork and contemporary photographs, tells the story of Nazi Germany's 'lost' strategic bomber. Comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries, A unique source of information, researched by recognised experts and brought to life by first-hand accounts from the combat veterans themselves, Concise, authoritative text is supported by up to 30 original colour artworks, specially commissioned scale drawings, and the best archival photography from around the world Book jacket., In many ways, the Heinkel He 177 'Greif' (Griffon) was Nazi Germany's 'lost' strategic bomber.
