Notes
Who are you? A singer/songwriter from Arizona. What do you play? 'Southwestern rock and roll', alternative country, blues and a little jazz. Where are you from originally? Atlanta, Ga. I was born in Tucson, AZ. My paternal father was going to the U of A law school when I was born. My mother and father were divorced and she married my dad when I was 4. He was in the radio business and we ended up in the Atlanta when I turned 10. I went to the University of Georgia and then transferred to NAU in Flagstaff, AZ my junior year. I have been in Arizona since except for 10 years I spent in Nashville pursuing a songwriting career and 'managing' an artist. I wasn't a very good manager and I only got a few songs published. Nashville is a very closed and controlled music town. You are either in or you ain't. And it's very difficult to get 'in'. Coupled with the fact I was getting a divorce, it was time to go back to Arizona. I also made the decision I only wanted to write for myself and if other artists somewhere down the road wanted to sing any of my songs, great. Did you graduate? Yeah. I got a degree in journalism but I immediately formed a band. My parents were pleased. They said is this why we spent the money to send you to college. I'm still playing after all these years. However, I did get to use my degree when I got a job as a junior high science teacher. My degree was in writing and now I'm teaching science....go figure. I guess they had no one else to do it. Moral of the story....stay in school...or, have your head examined. If someone told me they aspired to teach junior high kids, I would tell them they were crazy. Definitely the hardest job I've ever had...but the most rewarding. I also work for an insurance company inspecting property part time. It's a great job. I travel around the state taking pictures, camp in the desert or along the Colorado River and write songs at night. And... I get paid for it. Imagine that! What are your musical influences? Growing up in the south I loved all the 'soul groups' of the 60's. Since my dad was in the radio business I got to go to almost every concert I wanted to in Atlanta. And....then came The Beatles and all bets were off. I was 11 years old and I was at a bowling alley and I went and bought the 'Meet The Beatles' album. It was 1964 and time stood still. I came home and my dad asked me why I bought the record when he got them all for free at the station. I just had to have the record right then. I got to go see The Beatles with James Brown opening the show at the Atlanta stadium. The girls were screaming so loud I could barely hear. Still today I believe they are the best group to have ever 'landed' on this planet. I'm still waiting for the next group of 'aliens' to show up. I probably won't see it in my lifetime. I like alot of music...jazz, country, rock. Old Sinatra songs, Ray Charles, Harry Connick, Jr. If I'm driving down the road I like to listen to jazz. I was blessed to have grown up in the 60's and 70's when there was so much great music around. Where do you play? Mainly in Northern Arizona. Places like Sedona and the Verde Valley. We used to play all over the state and probably in the near future we will start traveling again now that the CD is done. There's a great club in Clarkdale called the 10/12 club where we play at every other month. There are still good clubs in Jerome, Prescott and Flagstaff as well. But overall, the club scene is not like it used to be. With the opening of so many casinos, people are transfixed on slot machines. And to get jobs in the casinos, nobody seems to care alot about the music. It's just a gig. And...there are cops on every street corner so alot of my old friends are afraid to go out at night. I've owned 3 nightclubs over the years where my bands played at but now being in the club business is very risky because of all the laws, etc. What are your main concerns? The war. Global warming. Poverty. We seem to fight all the wrong batt
