Synopsis
A vivid, stylish, and fascinating look at internationally acclaimed architects and their work. Beginning in the 1940s, John A. Russell, dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, nurtured a strong tradition of Modernist design with close connections to architectural giants such as Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius. Under Russell's guidance, a generation of young architects, such as James Donahue and David Thordarson, adapted the principles of European Modernism to the prairie geography. Other nationally renowned architects, such as Étienne Gaboury and Gustavo da Roza, also left a lasting Modernist mark on Winnipeg's skyline and private residences. Edited by Serena Keshavjee and designed by architect Herbert Enns, Winnipeg Moderncaptures the grace and beauty of the Modernist period and includes critical and historical essays on the aesthetic and social project of Modernist architecture in Winnipeg. Lavishly illustrated with 300 photographs from provincial archives, the private archives of architect Henry Kalen, and contemporary photographer Martin Tessler, this book is a testament to the Modernist principles of structural expression and purity of form., A vivid, stylish, and fascinating look at internationally acclaimed architects and their work.Beginning in the 1940s, John A. With a reputation for providing a solid Beaux-Arts education, and with the promotion of John A. Russell to the position of Dean, the school became a leader in North America for disseminating Modernist principles. Russell, an American trained at MIT, immediately began hiring first-rate faculty internationally, including James Donahue, who studied under Gropius at Harvard; Wolfgang Gerson, who trained in Bristol; and the Scottish Jim Christie. Russell also encouraged his students to do graduate work at top schools around the world, including working with London's Arup Associates--the firm responsible for the engineering of the Centre Georges Pompidou--and Mies van der Roche, at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The direct influence of Mies in Winnipeg resulted in an extraordinarily large number of buildings that are characterized by a strict adherence to the Modernist principles of truth to material, structural expression, and purity of form. Finally, the letter is arrived today this morning after over a month waiting is over now. Good package and the photo postcard look great and lovely condition. The problem with the USPS in America (Carol Stream, IL) is a very late with longest delayed despite I paid them expensive postage costs and poor time management, the eBay seller is not his fault but massive appreciated for his efforts and sort out with USPS quicker and resolve the problem. Seller is a great communicator. Many thank you.
