Reviews
Dirty Linen (p.91) - "This music is both deeply rhythmic, as one would expect from Moroccan players, and also incredibly texturally rich." Dirty Linen (p.57) - "[The album] has Hassan and an excellent group of musicians showcasing the many varied colors of his country's music....Hassan has preserved both the modern and ancient influences..."
Additional information
Personnel: Chalf Hassan (oud, percussion); Ahmed Naim (guitar); Mohammed Charafa, Said Gila, Omar Talha (strings); Abdel Wahed Fafi (saxophone); Ahmed Elfad (keyboards); Abdel Karim Saad, Lahssen Mounir, Mustapha Fouting, Alaoui Rabou (percussion). Audio Mixer: Chalf Hassan. Liner Note Authors: Diz Heller; Chalf Hassan. Recording information: Sama Master Studios, Casablanca. Photographer: Mostafa Hayeg. Translators: Diz Heller; Jeannine Blanpain. Arranger: Chalf Hassan. Not really a traditionalist, Chalf Hassan nonetheless does a pretty good job of capturing the aesthetic of a location or mood. His oud playing is informed far more by North African influences than Spanish ones (in particular one can hear parallels to the Gnawa gnbri throughout the album). The sound does draw from sources beyond Morocco, with keyboards reminiscent of Algerian sounds and flute pieces reminiscent of Turkish idioms. Still, it's an interesting album, and rousing at the very least. Give it a listen for some nice grooves and a bit of belly dance, not merely with more academic intents. ~ Adam Greenberg
