Part of the success of the Pentax SMC DA is that although it is a “kit lens,” which is usually designed as cheaply as possible, Pentax decided to go with more quality than expected and has created a kit lens with the serious photographer in mind. This means that the Pentax lens has both manual and automatic options, not to mention a frontal element that is non-rotating. This allows the use of filters and is much more attractive to the more serious photographer than the usual elements of the average kit lens.
