There are a variety of reasons moisture can get into a lighting assembly. This can be due to a worn or loose seal on the back of the assembly which holds the part in place. It can also be due to a loose or cracked assembly cover.

How do you remove a light bulb from a taillight?

There is a port on the back of the lighting assembly. You will need to grab hold of the wires going to the back of the assembly and turn either to the right or left depending on the specific housing you are working with. This will dislodge the bulb from the socket and allow you to pull the bulb through the rubberized seal.

Are there any special tools required to change taillights?

No. Taillights on your Toyota Highlander can be removed and replaced using basic hand tools.

What causes a Highlander taillight to illuminate more when braking?

The reason that a taillight has a brighter illumination when the brake is applied in the vehicle is due to a double light bulb design. The first light bulb is illuminated whenever the vehicle is powered on. The second light bulb is powered when the brake inside of the car is pressed. This design allows for clear signaling to other drivers when a vehicle is present or will be slowing or stopping.
