A science fiction author first conceived of this type of phone in 1928, but an actual prototype was not invented until the 1970s. Author Philip Francis Nowlan described a flip phone in his novella "Armageddon 2419 A.D." He envisioned a compact-sized phone that when flipped open, his characters used to converse with a person in another location.
