Purple Flip Cell Phones

A Quick Guide to Purple Flip Cell Phones

Cell phones and smartphones like the iPhone come in a bevy of colors, including purple. When first developed, users often had a choice of black or black. As the technology developed for the smartphone portable communications medium, so did the color choices.

What is a flip phone?

A flip phone, also called a clamshell phone, features two pieces, either square or rectangular, connected by a hinge unit. When opened, the interior upper half features the screen and ear speaker while the interior lower half features the keyboard and microphone/audio transmitter. Closing the two pieces protects the screen and keyboard from wear and tear. The cell phone can ring and accept text messages while closed or opened. The hinge appears in a different place on a flip phone and a clamshell phone design. A hinge on the short side denotes a flip, but when there is a hinge on the long side, that makes it a clamshell. Clamshells tend to have a square design and closely resemble a women's makeup or lighted compact. Flip phones often resemble a bar phone when closed, but somewhat resemble a traditional phone receiver when opened.

A science fiction author first conceived of this type of phone in 1928, but an actual prototype was not invented until the 1970s. Author Philip Francis Nowlan described a flip phone in his novella "Armageddon 2419 A.D." He envisioned a compact-sized phone that when flipped open, his characters used to converse with a person in another location.
