How to Shop for Flip Phones

It's true that smartphones have been an innovative technology recently but many folks still prefer the basic and simple quality of a flip phone. It performs a lot of the same tasks as a smart phone - the necessary tasks that make having a cellphone worthwhile in the first place. It receives calls, makes and receives texts, and takes pictures with its camera. There are a few reasons to still consider a flip phone a necessary device.

What Are the Benefits of a Flip Phone?

There are a few benefits when it comes to Panasonic phones, some of which include:

  • Good for emergencies. Even if you own a smartphone that's your "main" cell phone, it's a worthwhile idea to have a compact, small phone around for when you may need to place a call during an emergency.
  • Basic and simple. These older mobile phones are a good choice for those who do not need (or want) access to apps.
  • Text away. Text all you like with one of these phones, and some of them even include a QWERTY keyboard to make it a little easier. Both SMS and MMS messaging is supported.
  • Compact. These phones are ultra compact meaning you can stash them easily in your pocket or purse without having to worry if they'll fit.
  • Unlocked. Many of these phones are factory unlocked which means you can take them to any carrier for your phone service - you're not tied down to one carrier.
  • Camera. For those who still want to take pictures with their phones, these flip devices have reliable cameras and you can still send the via email or SMS.
  • Screen size. Screen sizes vary on these but it is possible to find a larger phone with a wider screen for more visibility.

How Does a Flip Phone Operate?

You may wonder how one of these cell phones work, as there's no Android or iOS choice. These mobile phones:

  • No operating system. Essentially, a smartphone is a mini computer that needs an OS (operating system) in order to function. Because you're not trying to access apps on your flip device, there's no OS.
  • There may be some internet. Your older cell phone may have access to the internet and browser, although it may be very limited. These basic phones essentially depend on the carrier's cell towers to run them, since your two basic functions will be talk and text.

Are There Flip Phone Accessories?

When it comes to these older phones, you'll still want some accessories to make your experience enjoyable. Some of these include:

  • Bluetooth handset or headset. If the phone offers Bluetooth, you'll still need a way to go hands free.
  • Earbuds. You may be able to listen to some music or media on your device, so be sure to have a pair of earbuds.
  • Extra batteries. Cell batteries fail often, so it's good to always have an extra set on hand.
