The Nike Hyperdunk exploded on the shoe stage in 2008 with a viral video featuring Kobe Bryant hopping over a speeding car in the new silhouette. An international spotlight was placed on these basketball shoes at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing when team captain Kobe Bryant led his team to Gold while sporting Nike Hyperdunks. The shoe received additional attention when the 2008 United We Rise Hyperdunk release was displayed on the podium in Beijing after the U.S. Men's and Women's National Teams both won gold.
The 2008 Hyperdunk would see several evolutions in design and performance through the release of the follow-up model, the Hyperdunk 2010; the Zoom Hyperdunk 2011, even lighter than its predecessors; the Hyperdunk 2013 inspired by the game of All-star point guard Kyrie Irving; and the Hyperdunk 2015 Low, with a special player exclusive colorway designed for Paul George. The materials in the Hyperdunk perform well, fit like a glove, and provide ventilation. The 2008 Hyperdunk featured two technologies from Nike, released just before the shoe's debut:
Flywire a lightweight upper material that uses polyurethane panels supported by strong Vectran fibers to support the foot, and Lunar Foam a high rebound foam that provides weight reduction and energy rebound to the soles of the shoe. The lacing system is linked by a hidden ghilley eyelet that helps connect the midfoot to the ankle for added stability, a problem for the Nike Huarache 2K5.
The outsole is comprised of a large Zoom unit in the heel which offers incredible levels of responsiveness and impact protection, and Lunar Foam in the forefoot area which is lighter than Phylon. To keep the Nike Air sneakers locked on the feet, the 2008 Hyperdunk features a defined collar and molded heel counter. In the 2018 Hyperdunk X release, the following features are found:
- A large Zoom unit in the heel and a smaller unit in the forefoot provides well-balanced cushioning, impact protection, and bounce
- The basketball court shoes use a multi-directional pattern that looks like soundwaves to provide coverage from slipping in any direction
