The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a film franchise based on Marvel comic books. It is a shared universe, so while Thor is not a direct sequel to Iron Man 2, it does exist within the same world and contains references to it. The media available includes:

• DVDs: These discs contain MCU movies in a resolution up to 720 pixels.
• Blu-ray: These discs contain MCU movies at 1080 pixels and/or at 4K as well as in 3D in some cases.
• Box sets: MCU box sets contain multiple movies pertaining to a franchise or phase.
• Limited editions: MCU special editions have special packaging and/or memorabilia.
• Tie-in comic books: These limited series and one shots expand the MCU via a traditional comic book format.

Marvel has organized its cinematic universe into phases, which are essentially extended story arcs. Phase One began with Iron Man and dealt with the formation of the Avengers. Phase Two introduced Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy and concluded with battling Ultron. Phase Three dealt with Civil War; introduced Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther; and culminates with the Infinity War. Phases are an alternative to franchises and can make purchasing the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe cheaper than purchasing a movie at a time.

Yes. However, although part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they are not necessarily packaged with the MCU branding. The ABC series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is presented simply as Marvel. The Netflix shows, such as “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones,” are packaged as Marvel and Netflix.

Marvel has released a collectors’ edition for each of the first three phases. It has also released a collectors’ edition for all of the franchises that have had at least three movies. Note that the collectors’ editions are not limited editions, but they may have their packaging updated from time to time. The limited editions are collectors’ editions that are only made for a limited period and often include memorabilia.
