Car Audio 101: Understanding Lanzar Mono Channel Amplifiers

Configuring the sound system in your car is simple when you understand whats needed to power components like door speakers and subwoofers. Lanzar mono channel amplifiers are designed to allow you to equip your sound system with an efficient way to integrate a sub with your factory-installed speakers.

What is a mono channel audio car amplifier?

A mono or monoblock amp is a high-powered, one-channel amplifier that is used in car audio systems. While stereo amps distinguish between left and right sound output, monoblocks dont differentiate between left and right. Mono amps are generally not full range since their most common application is powering subwoofers. Full range refers to the ability to play a wider range of audio frequencies. Because subwoofers play the lowest frequencies, they dont require full range support from the powering amp. Monoblocks primarily have Class D circuitry; however, some contain Class A/B circuitry.

What does class mean in reference to audio amplifiers?
  • Class AB: These work by current that flows through a group of transistors, some of which operate constantly and others that switch off whenever theyre not receiving a signal.
  • Class D: When a Class D amplifier receives a signal, it directs the signal toward the high current pulses generated by the power supply. It creates an above-hearing-range distortion that is removed at the point of output by a low-pass filter. The transistors in Class D devices switch on and off at a rapid pace. They are small in size despite their power rating. They create the high efficiency required to power subs.
How do Lanzar mono channel car audio amplifiers work?

Lanzar monoblocks are designed to work over a range of impedance levels. They contain filters and tone controls that are specifically optimized for recreating low bass sounds. They have a high power-to-heat ratio that delivers low-frequency signals efficiently. Some mono channel amplifiers run at a 1-ohm impedance level, but most operate at 2 ohms.

How can you connect two subwoofers to a mono amplifier?

You can connect 4-ohm subwoofers or 2-ohm dual voice coil subs to a Lanzar monoblock to get more power at lower independence levels. Bass frequencies are less directional than other sound frequencies. Since its difficult to distinguish where the sound originates from, mono channel transmission is optimal for bass.

Is a Lanzar mono channel bridgeable?

Bridging refers to combining two channels into one channel in order to drive more power. Since there is only one channel, bridging isnt necessary. Monoblocks usually include two sets of speaker terminals that allow you to connect two speakers or subs. Even though there are two terminals, the positive and negative terminals are tied together inside of the amplifier.
