First released in 1994, the Air Jordan 1 was a monumental basketball sneaker that almost never saw the light of day. Yet, it was the first in what would become an iconic and history-making line of sneakers. The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Light Fusion Red” is the latest re-release of this famed line, retroed in 2021, simultaneously demonstrating the brand’s timelessness and ability to reinvent itself with the times.

History of the Air Jordan 1

Legend has it that, in 1994, famed basketball star Michael Jordan was taking meetings ahead of signing an endorsement deal. The Chicago Bulls’ rookie was known to wear Converse and loved adidas, so he met with both of those brands, though he did not sign a deal with either company. That being said, he disliked Nike so much that he would not meet with them at all.

It was Jordan’s mother Deloris who finally convinced him to sit down with Nike and listen to their pitch. At first, he visited the Oregon Nike campus simply to appease his mother, but he ended up leaving with a unique and exciting contract that would have him earn more than any other athlete with a sneaker endorsement. Michael Jordan would become the face of a dedicated basketball sneaker line: the Air Jordan.
