What is the history of the Jim Hjelm company?

Jim Hjelm grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. As a child, he fantasized about designing clothes for comic book characters like Brenda Starr and dreamed of attending film school when he grew old enough. Instead, he landed a job accidentally at the House of Bianchi in Boston, which specialized in bridal dress design. There, Hjelm studied with wedding dress designer Priscilla of Boston. He designed both bridal dresses and party dresses for notable customers, including Lucy Baines and Julie and Tricia Nixon, daughters of presidents.

In 1980, Hjelm moved to New York to work for Galina-Bouquet, Inc. He toughened up as he worked under wedding dress designer Steve Lawrence, and eventually began to raise money for his own dress company: Hjelm’s Private Collection. He started selling shares and designed a collection of traditional bridal gowns in the early 1990s. Jim Hjelm then took steps to make his gowns more accessible to more brides. In 1994, he started designing bridesmaid dresses as part of the Occasions Collection with the goal of reuse, so that women could wear their dresses after they participated in weddings. The Jim Hjelm bridal collection of wedding dresses is designed by Francesca Pitera out of California.
