Working with a Lighting Console

A lighting console is the core component of a lighting system. Everything the lighting system is capable of doing, the operator controls through the lighting console. Not only does the lighting console have to possess the power to control the entire system, the user interface must match the capabilities of the lighting programmers as well as the lighting console controllers.

What Are the Different Stage Lighting Rigging Positions?

The direction of light is as important as the lighting equipment. the choice of which lighting angles to use for the stage lighting you decide where you need the light to come from. Below are some of the positions that you can use in your venue.

  • Bars: If your venue is a theater then you'll realize the spaces have scaffold bars where you can rig lanterns. If the bars have sockets, they are internally-wired bars (often abbreviated as IWBs) which use the bar to carry the wiring to the sockets. Clamps help to rig lanterns onto the bar. Remember to use a safety wire to hold the lantern in the air should the clamp fail.
  • Booms: These are vertical scaffold poles, which fix to horizontal boom arms, onto which lanterns can mount, to create side light or cross light across the stage. Depending on height and weight of the lanterns, the top of a boom may need to hang from a rope attached to the grid at the top of the fly tower, mounted in a base which screws to the stage floor.
  • Ladder: This is the flown vertical structure at the side of the stage that you use for cross lighting, but with the added advantage of flowing out to allow scenery to leave the stage.
