A brief history of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park

Comerica Park replaced the aging Tiger Stadium in 2000. Tiger Stadium, built in 1911, was deteriorating, and it was decided that further renovations wouldn't be worthwhile. Groundbreaking for Comerica Park began Oct. 29, 1997. It was named for Comerica Bank, which was headquartered in Detroit at the time of the stadium's opening. It seats 41,681 people, including club seats and suites. The Tigers played their first game on a snowy day in April 2000, against the Seattle Mariners. The Tigers won with a score of 5 to 2.

What are some unique features of Comerica Park?

This open-air stadium has a 15-foot tiger statue greeting you at the entrance. There are also eight other large tiger statues located throughout the grounds. Two of them are on the scoreboard in left field, and their eyes light up and a growl is heard when the Tigers score. Comerica Park features the "keyhole," which is a dirt path between home plate and the pitcher's mound. This path was used in older stadiums and not in most newer ones. Comerica Park and Chase Field in Arizona are the only newer stadiums with the keyhole. A few other unique features of Comerica Park include:

  • Rides: There is a carousel and Ferris wheel within the park with baseball-themed seating.
  • Statues: Statues of all retired Tigers players line the left-field concourse.
  • Tiger heads: Tiger heads with lighted baseballs in their teeth line the outer walls of the stadium.
  • Home plate: The home-plate area has a "home-plate" irregular-pentagon shape, not a circle as is found in many other ballparks.
What kind of food is available at Comerica Park?

In addition, you can find a vast array of foods that cater to many different diets, including vegan and gluten-free. You can find local favorites, like Coney dogs and Polish sausage. Little Caesar's Pizza and Big League Grill have multiple locations throughout the stadium. There is a large food court appropriately called Comerica Bank Big Cat Court, located near Gate A.

What is the history of the Detroit Tigers?

The Tigers began as a minor league team in 1896. By 1901, they had declared themselves a major league team as a part of the American League. Their first game as a major league team was against the Milwaukee Brewers. They were down 13-4 in the ninth inning but came back to win the historic game with a score of 14-13.

In 1905, an 18-year-old Ty Cobb joined the team and played solely for the Tigers until retiring in 1928. He is considered one of the greatest baseball players in history. The Tigers have gone on to win four World Series titles in 1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984.
