This is another rare antique 1820s rocker balance for checking the weight of 1 and 1/2 sovereign gold coins. Made by Whitfield it includes a set of grain weights in its fitted wooden case, and the instruction on the lid quantify each grain under weight as worth 2 pence.

This is a rarity, a really nice example of the first rocker balance to incorporate a slider to quantify in grains any shortfall in the weight of a sovereign or 1/2 sovereign gold coin. Introduced in 1829 it is marked by the maker "Cattle's Patent" on both the poise and the steel stand.
